Being Real, Beyond the Facade ~ Guest, Monica Nepomuceno

Being Real, Beyond the Facade ~ Guest, Monica Nepomuceno

Let’s Talk Wellness ~ with Host, Mara James

It’s easy to get distracted by the noise and forget that real people are really having mental health challenges, and yet the main way we can help ourselves and each other, is by being real with ourselves and each other.  It is not easy, but it creates real change when we are willing to choose it. That is what Mara and her guest, Monica Nepomuceno are exploring this week.

Monica Nepomuceno holds a Master of Social Work from California State University Sacramento. She currently works as an Education Programs Consultant at the California Department of Education.

Monica is passionate about creating a better public understanding of the mental health needs of children and youth. This includes helping all school staff, parents, and community members increase their knowledge and awareness of student mental health. She is highly committed to helping schools and districts build their capacity to support student-centered mental health programs, which include the identification of students in need, improving school climate, providing direct services, staff training, student training, opportunities for youth engagement and a role for peer support.

Monica understands firsthand the effects that an undiagnosed and untreated mental health issue can have on a person's life. Her life experiences have helped her advocate for students’ diverse needs and the ability for youth-serving adults to intervene in a timely, respectful, and culturally appropriate manner. Monica stresses the importance of recognizing symptoms early on and before they interfere with daily functioning or become debilitating.

“Being real” is a big part of Monica’s method.  She is not into sugar-coating or hype when it comes to supporting people through mental health challenges.  She knows that being real is the key to having real change, and making a difference.
