A Path to Family Wellness ~ Guest, Kristen Perlmutter

Family wellness can be a bit of a mystery, and can seem like a challenge, especially in this day and age.  And yet it still is possible, and even good for everyone in the family.  This week, Mara welcomes Kristen Perlmutter to share some of her story of finding a path to family wellness, and being inspired to help others do the same.
Kristen Perlmutter is passionate about family wellness and education. Her goal is to help identify and guide parents through the challenges they face in their homes, community and beyond, as well as offer resources for optimal parenting success. She is a busy mother of three with kids ranging from 9 to 13 and has been married for 16 years. She is a former educator and she's active in philanthropy. Kristen graduated from the University of Arizona in 2000.
Kristen is a Co-Founder of Mainspring Family Wellness Center, with Dr. Jenna Flowers, in Newport Beach, California.

Child Behaviors and Mental Health ~ Guest, Dr. Brett Patterson

Have you wondered what behaviors are “normal” for your child, and what behaviors indicate there may be underlying mental health issues?.  This week, Mara welcomes Dr. Brett Patterson to share some insights on the connections between child behaviors and mental health.
Dr. Brett Patterson is a Clinical Psychologist with over 25 years of experience working with adults, adolescents and children in various inpatient and outpatient settings.  He has been providing behavioral health support services throughout Southern California since 2002.  Dr. Patterson’s primary areas of interest include cognitive-behavioral and mindfulness-based interventions for adolescents and adults, parent coaching, and organization-based consultation/training services specializing in behavioral improvement.  Areas of clinical training include working with common life-stressors, as well as with various diagnoses that include (but are not limited to) attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress disorder, general stress management, and coping with acute/chronic illness.  
Dr. Patterson also routinely serves as an organizational consultant developing prevention/early intervention programs and providing behavior support trainings with professionals in both the commercial and non-profit sectors.  Over the years, Dr. Patterson has provided more than 200 behavior-related and program development trainings for schools, conventions and organizations in Oregon, Ohio, Oklahoma, Texas and throughout all of Southern California.

Recognizing & Screening for Dyslexia and ADHD ~ Guest, Dr. Jordana Levine

Learning disorders often have a stigma that can make a child feel overwhelmed and like something is wrong with them - but it does not have to be that way.  Mara welcomes Dr. Jordana Levine this week, to explore the not-so-complicated ways that early screening for dyslexia and ADHD can make a big difference in the development of our children’s cognitive and learning abilities.
Dr. Jordana Levine is a licensed educational psychologist and certified school psychologist in practice in Newport Beach, California. She holds these professional licenses/credentials in California, Connecticut, and New York.  She provides psychoeducational evaluation services and educational counseling for children, adolescents, and adults.  Her areas of focus are ADHD, Dyslexia, and Executive Functioning. 
Working in the field since 2005 in hospitals, special education, and regular education in both independent and public school settings, Dr. Levine has deep experience administering neuropsychological and psychoeducational evaluations to identify student needs and establish intervention strategies for remediation and school accommodations. 
In 2021, Dr. Levine formed her private practice: Levine Assessment & Learning, Inc. in Newport Beach, California.  She began her career working for independent, public and non-public schools in New York City and Westchester County, New York.  Dr. Levine also worked as the Head School Psychologist for the Wooster School in Danbury, Connecticut and, most recently, as a school psychologist in the Capistrano Unified School District.  
Dr. Levine has a passion for working with all kinds of children and their families, and is committed to staying apprised of the most recent developments and research  in her field.

Dr. Shari Becker has been a clinical psychologist since 1998, after taking a leap of faith to leave a law practice that she didn’t find fulfilling.  Her love for yoga started almost 20 years ago and she became certified as a yoga teacher in 2014.  It is Shari’s great pleasure and privilege to integrate the teachings of yoga, mindfulness and traditional psychotherapy approaches in her private psychotherapy practice, meditation and mindfulness-based gentle yoga classes.

Debra Ann is the Founder and CEO of the non-profit, Helping the Behaviorally Challenging Child (HBCC).  HBCC provides Parenting Classes, and trainings for educators and healthcare providers focused on understanding children with behavioral challenges through a new lens.
HBCC trainings in Collaborative Problem Solving® in Orange County, California provide effective, evidence-based ways to reduce adult/child power struggles and conflict. HBCC also networks as a clearinghouse to help families connect to Support Groups, Learning Centers, Service Providers and Advocates who embrace rethinking conventional approaches to behavioral difficulties to strengthen relationships and teach skills.
Debra Ann is passionate about sharing her experience, strength & hope and is currently learning how to incorporate CPS behavioral goals into IEPs, 504s and for any child in the radar who is not meeting behavioral expectations!!
