Connecting With Your Higher Self ~ Guest, Laura Mekola

Let’s Talk Wellness ~ with Host, Mara James
How can connecting with our higher self contribute to our wellness?  Mara welcomes Laura Mekola this week, to share from her personal and professional experiences how hypnosis can open a clear channel of communication to our higher selves and help us move beyond our limitations.
Laura Mekola is a certified hypnotherapist, and practices medical hypnosis using deep trance.  Deep trance gives her access to her clients’ internal programming, so it is very effective.  It allows her to have a discussion with the client’s subconscious and higher self – ask questions and get answers – and ask for help with releasing everything from physical pain to emotional trauma.
She continues to be fascinated by the power of the mind, and how unlocking that power can help us transform our lives.

Being Real, Beyond the Facade ~ Guest, Monica Nepomuceno

Let’s Talk Wellness ~ with Host, Mara James
It’s easy to get distracted by the noise and forget that real people are really having mental health challenges, and yet the main way we can help ourselves and each other, is by being real with ourselves and each other.  It is not easy, but it creates real change when we are willing to choose it. That is what Mara and her guest, Monica Nepomuceno are exploring this week.
Monica Nepomuceno holds a Master of Social Work from California State University Sacramento. She currently works as an Education Programs Consultant at the California Department of Education.
Monica is passionate about creating a better public understanding of the mental health needs of children and youth. This includes helping all school staff, parents, and community members increase their knowledge and awareness of student mental health. She is highly committed to helping schools and districts build their capacity to support student-centered mental health programs, which include the identification of students in need, improving school climate, providing direct services, staff training, student training, opportunities for youth engagement and a role for peer support.
Monica understands firsthand the effects that an undiagnosed and untreated mental health issue can have on a person's life. Her life experiences have helped her advocate for students’ diverse needs and the ability for youth-serving adults to intervene in a timely, respectful, and culturally appropriate manner. Monica stresses the importance of recognizing symptoms early on and before they interfere with daily functioning or become debilitating.
“Being real” is a big part of Monica’s method.  She is not into sugar-coating or hype when it comes to supporting people through mental health challenges.  She knows that being real is the key to having real change, and making a difference.

Healing Together ~ Guest, Eric Kussin

Let’s Talk Wellness ~ with Host, Mara James
Do mental health issues really have to separate us from each other?  Mara welcomes Eric Kussin this week, and he says “absolutely not”.  And he is on a mission to inspire people to come together and share their mental health challenges, to help each other heal.
Eric Kussin is an 19-year professional sports executive, who got his start at the NBA League Office. After five years with the League, he went the team business route and rose the ranks with the expansion Chicago Sky, Phoenix Suns. He then switched over to the NHL, working with the New Jersey Devils and Florida Panthers.  However, a debilitating mental health crisis stopped Eric’s career and life in its tracks for over two and a half years.
After many failed treatment modalities, Eric was lucky enough to learn healing practices that enabled him to dig out of his abyss, and found a higher calling, launching a non-profit at the end of 2017 called, We’re All a Little “Crazy,” The Global Mental Health Alliance.
The Alliance is comprised of athletes and celebrities, along with media members, expert practitioners, advocates, and everyday heroes who’ve come together to make talking about mental health a common topic for “5 out of 5” of us. Their #SameHere Movement has swept across college campuses in the US from Cornell to USC, K-12’s, Corporate Offices from CNBC to JP Morgan Chase, and Professional Sports Teams from the LA Clippers to the New York Mets in just over two years.
The Movement has recently begun to expand globally as well, with events in markets outside of the US.  To “keep his foot in sports,” Eric consults for a number of professional sports teams and leagues, guiding their ticket and sponsorship sales and retention efforts.
